Speaker shuts off LoP’s mike in Kerala Assembly

Kerala Assembly: The proceedings of the House have been adjourned following uproar in the Kerala Assembly. The proceedings of the House will now resume on March 20. As soon as the proceedings of the House began on Friday, the Congress-led opposition created ruckus, following which Speaker AN Shamsheer adjourned the House till 11 am on Monday.

Leader of the Opposition VD Satheesan, on behalf of the Speaker, was not allowed to raise the issue regarding the alleged assault on the marshals of the House during the Question Hour. The Leader of the Opposition was demanding permission to raise the issue of registration of non-bailable offense cases against the UDF MLAs. The protest started in the house when the permission was not given by the speaker of the assembly. During the question-answer session in the Assembly, Speaker Shamsheer switched off the microphone of Leader of the Opposition Satheesan.

Leader of Opposition said – Complainants are being made criminals

The Leader of the Opposition said in the Assembly that it is very unfortunate that the situation has become such that the complainants are being criminalized here. A case has been registered against the MLAs who protested in the Assembly in connection with the Brahmapuram incident.

Satheesan was referring to the Kerala police registering a case against opposition legislators in connection with the ruckus in front of the state assembly speaker’s office on March 15. The two cases were registered on the basis of complaints by MLA Sanish Kumar and watch and ward employee Sheena.

Speakers were repeatedly giving stop signal

The Speaker then intervened during the speech of Leader of the Opposition Satheesan and asked him to draw conclusions as he had made his point. When Satheesan continued to speak even after repeated stop signals from the speaker, the latter switched off Satheesan’s microphone.

In a session that lasted for about nine minutes, the opposition protested and came to the Well of the House, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House for the day. Earlier on Thursday, the Kerala Legislative Assembly session was adjourned following a standoff between the opposition and the ruling party over ruckus in the House.
