15 killed in earthquake in Ecuador

Ecuador Earthquake: At least 15 people were killed in a powerful earthquake that struck Ecuador and a coastal region in northern Peru on Saturday afternoon. The intensity of the earthquake has been measured at 6.8 on the Richter scale. Many houses, schools and hospital buildings have also been damaged due to the strong tremors of the earthquake. Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso said in a tweet that emergency teams were working to provide relief to those affected.

According to media reports, the epicenter of the earthquake was about 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) from the town of Balao in Guayas province at a depth of 66.4 km (41.3 mi). Officials also said that at least 126 people were injured in the quake.

According to reports, the tremor was felt in Peru from its northern border with Ecuador to the central Pacific coast. Peruvian Prime Minister Alberto Otarola said a four-year-old girl was killed when a house collapsed in the Tumbes region on the border with Ecuador.

Be aware that Ecuador is prone to earthquakes. In 2016, an earthquake north of the Pacific coast in a more populous region of the country killed more than 600 people.
